CAN 2025 : La VAR, « c’est catastrophique ! » assure Gernot Rohr, coach du Bénin
In an interview with France 24 before the Egypt-Benin match in the round of 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the Cheetahs' coach Gernot Rohr strongly criticized the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). He believes that the referees tasked with interpreting the footage make too many mistakes.
"I hope that for the later rounds, the round of 16, the quarterfinals and the semifinals, these mistakes will be corrected."
“At the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, where I was a consultant, I saw VAR working magnificently well. They never made a mistake. It was even held up as an example in European football. And here (in Morocco), it’s catastrophic. There are too many errors, and I hope that for the later rounds, the round of 16, the quarter-finals, and the semi-finals, these errors will be corrected,” said the Benin coach.
Clearly, the man did not really direct the VAR failure on the Benin - DRC match and the interpretation made by the video assistant referees on Abdoulaye Seck's first goal during the match between Senegal and Benin.
"There is a problem with the interpretation of VAR. For example, the first goal against Senegal that we conceded. It took 5 minutes for them to award a goal where there was an elbow to the back of my defender's neck. It's an interpretation. We need to put professionals in charge," insists the coach of the Cheetahs.
