For once, the White House occupant is taking a swipe at his French counterpart. This Tuesday from Washington, Donald Trump recounted his version of a conversation he allegedly had with Emmanuel Macron, during which the latter was supposedly forced to accept his demands on drug prices.
“I told him, ‘Emmanuel, if you haven’t agreed to everything we’re asking for by Monday, I’ll impose a 25% tax on all products coming from France!’ He replied, ‘No, no, no, you can’t do that!’” the American president recounted, imitating his French counterpart in a plaintive voice. “I retorted, ‘Yes, I can do it, and I will!’” he continued.
The Republican billionaire then explained that Emmanuel Macron quickly gave in to his demands. "Emmanuel told me: Deal, Donald, I'd love to raise the price of my prescription drugs by 200%! It would be an honor, Donald, anything you want! Don't tell the public, Donald, I beg you..." Trump continued, imitating a sobbing French head of state.
Trump's recurring request
Donald Trump has repeatedly called for higher drug prices in Europe so that, according to him, they can be lowered for Americans. This summer, the United States concluded a trade agreement with the European Union that stipulates that most European exports to the American market will be subject to a 15% tariff.
There has been no presidential announcement or decision in France regarding the price of medicines, contrary to what the occupant of the White House suggests.
Last December, Donald Trump claimed to have already forced Emmanuel Macron to back down on this sensitive issue across the Atlantic. He had already recounted similar exchanges with the French president. "Emmanuel, 100% you're going to do it. Please agree now. Be nice..." the American president said, already boasting of having imposed his demands.
An Elysée Palace source contacted by Le Figaro dismissed the story as "nonsensical," since the price of medications is not set by the President of the Republic in France. "One only needs to go to a pharmacy, as millions of French people do every day, to see that the price of medications has generally remained stable in our country in recent months," the source explained.
