There are republican rituals that demand decorum, not out of a taste for pomp, but out of respect for the institutions. A handover ceremony is neither an election rally, nor an open-air public forum, much less an outlet for online passions. It is the solemn moment when the State is transferred, when the continuity of the nation is affirmed. By firmly restoring order to a "runaway" audience during his inauguration, the new Minister of Culture, Crafts, and Tourism, Alpha Thiam, did not overstep his bounds; he performed an act of republican integrity.
Yet, a simple clarification was all it took for the social media machine to go into overdrive. In a grand display of absurd syncretism, the online tribunals saw fit to link this demand for silence to the minister's past as an activist, exhuming images of graffiti-covered murals from the presidential campaign and promises to lower the cost of living. What's the connection? None. Unless, of course, the aim is to disqualify the man before judging his work through some grotesque intellectual contortion.
This tendency to conflate everything is a symptom of a deeper problem: when political adversity overrides clear thinking, it breeds absurdity. We then witness a disheartening spectacle where caricature replaces criticism, and where fleeting hype stifles substance. Discipline is not the opposite of freedom; it is the driving force of development. No major national project has ever been built amidst chaos and anarchy.
In a country where everything is a priority, where the cultural, craft, and tourism sectors are awaiting major structural reforms, do we really have the luxury of getting lost in such trivialities? Our economic, social, and cultural emergencies deserve more serious debates than petty digital squabbles.
The stature of a minister of the Republic is not measured by the decibels of his detractors, but by his work ethic, his demonstrated will, and his determination to serve the nation. The facts, stubborn as they are, show that Alpha Thiam wasted no time. Aware of his sovereign responsibilities, he immediately set to work. He will be judged by his results, his reforms, and his impact on the ground. The rest is mere background noise. It is high time to replace the politics of spectacle with the politics of merit.
