Bollywood : Dharmendra, icône du cinéma indien, s’éteint à 89 ans
A major figure in Indian cinema and a familiar face to many Senegalese Bollywood enthusiasts, actor Dharmendra passed away on Monday, November 24th, at the age of 89. Considered one of the pillars of the Indian film industry, he leaves behind an exceptional career spanning more than sixty years, during which he shone in both popular romances and action films.
In Senegal, several of his works have particularly impressed the public, notably Sholay with Amitabh Bachchan, Yaadon Ki Bharat and Daram Veer.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the actor on X, hailing "the passing of a legend who turns a page in the history of Indian cinema." He also highlighted Dharmendra's unique talent, "an icon, a phenomenal actor who brought charm and depth to each of his roles."
With over 250 films to his credit, Dharmendra was one of the most prolific and beloved faces on the big screen. He also pursued a political career, serving in Parliament, and received several honorary awards over the years.
His rise to fame accelerated in 1966 when he appeared shirtless in the film My Heart Is Yours, Me, a first in Indian cinema that caused a real frenzy, especially among his admirers who sent him thousands of letters.
Born on December 8, 1935 in the state of Punjab, Dharmendra was not destined for the cinema. His entry into the industry was almost by chance: he won a competition organized by a celebrity magazine.
"I had nothing but my dreams," he confided one day. "I was just an uneducated villager who knew nothing about the acting profession."
His immense artistic legacy will continue to shine far beyond India, among the millions of fans who grew up with his films.
