Comme Ousmane Sonko, le président Adama Barrow suspend les voyages de ses ministres !
The winds of budgetary austerity are blowing through Senegambia. Following announcements by the Senegalese government, the Gambian presidency ordered, on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, the immediate suspension of all "non-essential official travel" by its officials, until further notice.
In a circular signed by Alieu Loum, Chief of Staff to the President, the Gambian government justifies these "rigorous budgetary measures" by citing the "negative repercussions" of the conflict in the Middle East. According to the document, this war is severely impacting the global economy, disrupting supply chains, and restricting access to essential goods and services.
The daily lives of Gambians are already severely impacted by inflation. This April, pump prices jumped by more than 22% for gasoline and more than 47% for diesel. Faced with this surge, the government was forced to announce fuel subsidies in an attempt to alleviate the hardships faced by a population already struggling in one of the 20 least developed countries in the world.
This decision by Banjul comes just three days after a nearly identical announcement was made in Dakar. Last Friday, the Senegalese Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, also confirmed the suspension of "non-essential" travel abroad for members of his government.
The head of the Senegalese government had cited similar reasons: an alarming level of public debt and the global economic repercussions linked to tensions in the Middle East.
