Macky Sall à l’assaut de l’ONU : l’heure du « Grand Oral » a sonné
In the wake of Senegal's independence celebrations, national diplomatic news has shifted to the international stage. Former President Macky Sall is preparing to take a decisive step in his bid for the United Nations Secretary-Generalship. Like his direct competitors, the former Senegalese head of state will have three hours to convince members of the organization during interactive dialogues scheduled to take place in New York.
According to the official schedule established on April 1, 2026, the series of hearings will begin on April 21 with Michelle Bachelet's testimony in the morning, followed by Rafael Mariano Grossi in the afternoon. The morning session on April 22 will be dedicated to Rebeca Grynspan, before Macky Sall concludes the series of hearings between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. These discussions will take place in the formal setting of the Council of Trustees' chamber and will be broadcast live worldwide.
The process imposes a rigorous and identical format for each candidate. The candidate must first present an introductory statement before participating in a question-and-answer session with representatives of member states and civil society. This direct confrontation aims to publicly assess each candidate's programmatic priorities, field experience, and actual capacity to lead a global organization facing multiple crises.
It is important to emphasize, however, that this "Grand Oral" is not a vote. The selection process for the future Secretary-General remains governed by strict rules, which stipulate a formal recommendation by the Security Council, followed by a nomination by the General Assembly. These interactive dialogues are nonetheless essential, as they help to clarify diplomatic positions and shape future power dynamics within the Security Council.
