Affaire du pétrolier Mersin : gros ouf de soulagement, l'intervention décisive du navire Touba Tawfekh
The risk of an environmental disaster has receded further for Senegal. The oil tanker Mersin, which was threatening to sink with its 39,000 tons of diesel fuel, has been partially saved. "The breaches have been sealed and the ship has been stabilized," applauded an expert involved in the salvage operations, interviewed by L'Observateur, which announced the good news in its Thursday edition.
The Mersin, which was listing heavily and seemed close to sinking into the ocean, was able to regain its balance because part of its cargo was removed. "The Touba Tawfekh was mobilized, and as of today [yesterday, Wednesday, December 3], 18,000 tons of fuel have been removed, significantly stabilizing the ship," the same expert emphasized.
The latter reports that "operations are continuing" to definitively secure the oil tanker and its entire cargo. L'Observateur indicates that these operations are being led by the High Authority for Coordination, Maritime Security, Maritime Safety and Marine Environmental Protection (HASSMAR), in collaboration with the National Navy, the African Refining Company, the Gendarmerie, the Port of Dakar, and Customs, among others.
The incident threatening the Mersin occurred Thursday evening 19 km off the coast of Dakar. The ship was reportedly hit by external explosions. Some attribute the detonations to drone strikes.
Alongside the ship salvage operations, an investigation has been launched to get to the bottom of this affair.
