Bassin du fleuve Gambie : des niveaux d’eau en baisse dans plusieurs stations, malgré une légère hausse à Kédougou.
The latest hydrological bulletin published by the Tambacounda-Kédougou Water Resources Brigade reveals a contrasting evolution of water levels at the different stations in the Gambia River basin.
While some localities recorded a slight increase, the general trend remains downward compared to the same period last year.
River tributaries under surveillance
According to readings taken this morning at 8 a.m., the Diaguiri station, located upstream from Mako, shows a water level of 2.97 meters, compared to 3.13 meters the previous day, a drop of 16 centimeters. By comparison, on the same date in 2024, the level was 4.95 meters, confirming a significant decrease this year.
At Afia Pont (Thiokoye), the trend reversed with a rise of 58 centimeters, going from 2.59 meters on October 8 to 3.17 meters this morning. However, this level remains well below the 5.73 meters recorded on the same date in 2024.
The Niokolo Koba station recorded a slight drop of 3 centimeters, with 5.50 meters compared to 5.53 meters the day before. Last year, the river peaked at 7.70 meters, a difference of more than two meters.
The stations of Sinthiou Malème, Goumbayel and Diahra Pont did not reach the measurement scale this morning.
The Gambia River: slight rise at Kédougou.
In Kédougou, the water level measured at 3.78 meters marks an increase of 12 centimeters compared to the previous day (3.66 m).
Even though the local trend is positive, the level remains significantly below that observed on October 9, 2024, when it reached 5.74 meters.
The alert level, set at 7 meters, is therefore not yet threatened.
Levels still low in Mako and Gouloumbou
In Mako, the water level fell from 3.66 meters to 3.58 meters, a drop of 8 centimeters in 24 hours.
The previous year, the level was much higher, at 5.15 meters, for an alert level set at 6 meters.
At Gouloumbou, the trend is following the same direction: 9.85 meters compared to 9.99 meters the day before, a drop of 14 centimeters. Here too, levels remain below the 11.85 meters recorded on October 9, 2024. The alert level at this station is set at 12 meters.
Missing data in Simenti
Hydrometric data from the Simenti station were not yet available this morning.
The latest reading on October 8 showed a level of 7.65 meters, well below the 11.53 meters recorded at the same time last year.
The alert level at this strategic point in Niokolo-Koba Park is 13 meters.
A season that is running out of steam
The latest trends confirm that the rainy season is coming to an end in the Kédougou region.
Despite some occasional increases, particularly in Kédougou and Afia Pont, water levels remain generally low compared to 2024.
Hydrological authorities are calling for continued vigilance, especially in areas sensitive to drought and dwindling water resources.
