Greenpeace Africa expresses its deep concern following the incident involving the Turkish oil tanker "Mersin" off the coast of Dakar. The organization commends the swift response of the authorities but warns of the potential for repeated industrial accidents at sea, recalling the gas leak that occurred in Saint-Louis in March 2025.
"However, this episode must be placed in a broader context: it is yet another major warning sign concerning the safety of maritime activities in Senegal. After the gas leak off the coast of Saint-Louis in March 2025, and the desalination plant project which continues to raise serious environmental concerns, the breakdown of the vessel 'Mersin' reveals a worrying trend. Our waters are repeatedly exposed to industrial risks that are insufficiently anticipated. These are no longer isolated events, but a pattern that is dangerously repeating itself. The statement shared by the Senegalese authorities describes the immediate technical measures, but does not answer the many essential questions for the public and for environmental protection," the statement reads.
Greenpeace Africa believes it is urgent that Senegal provide clarification on the causes of the incident, the risks to the marine ecosystem, the effectiveness of the pollution boom, and the fate of the vessel. The NGO calls for proactive management of industrial risks, so that ocean protection becomes a national priority, not an option.
"Senegal can no longer afford to simply react to successive incidents. Our marine ecosystems can no longer be exposed to repeated risks without transparency or robust preventative measures. We have narrowly avoided the worst on several occasions. This luck is not a strategy. Greenpeace Africa calls for an urgent review of industrial risk management at sea, to ensure that ocean protection becomes a national priority and not an option," states the Greenpeace Africa press release.

Senegal was a French colony, and the new government, along with the rest of West Africa, decided to expel the French military. This means that those who attacked the ship are seeking to harm Russia and West Africa by polluting the area, which will be a major problem to solve without foreign assistance.
