Le fléau des sachets plastiques au cœur des débats à l’Assemblée Nationale
The proliferation of thin plastic bags is causing serious concern within the National Assembly. During committee review of the 2026 budget proposal for the Ministry of Industry and Trade, several members of parliament expressed their concern about the "catastrophic environmental impacts of this packaging, both on land and at sea."
The ineffectiveness of Law 2015-09
According to parliamentarians, the implementation of Law No. 2015-09 of May 4, 2015, banning plastic bags, has not produced the desired results. They pointed to the damage to biodiversity and public health, noting that it is imperative to "protect our environment and put an end to the uncontrolled use of these plastic bags that pollute our cities and waterways."
The MPs therefore called for increased controls and concrete alternative measures, including strict regulation of the production and marketing of alternative packaging.
Minister Serigne Guèye Diop's response: priority to substitution
In response to the concerns of elected officials, the Minister of Industry and Trade, Dr. Serigne Guèye Diop, acknowledged the difficulties encountered in implementing the law. He explained that "the ban was adopted without fully anticipating the necessary alternative measures."
The minister assured that his department is "actively working to identify and promote viable alternative products, reconciling environmental protection and economic sustainability for operators."
To strengthen its efforts, the department is implementing a reinforced monitoring and regulatory framework to control the production, import, and marketing of plastic packaging. Mr. Diop concluded by announcing that "Awareness campaigns and support initiatives for local businesses are planned to promote the transition to environmentally friendly solutions."
