The Senegalese government announced on Friday the effective date of the electricity price reduction. "We needed to ensure the process was secure. These measures will come into effect no later than January 1, 2026 ," stated Birame Souleye Diop, the Minister of Energy, Petroleum and Mines.
He explained, regarding the first tier, that households consuming between 0 and 150 kWh were billed at 91.17 CFA francs per kWh. "The proposal is to lower this to 82 CFA francs per kWh, representing a 10% reduction," the minister stated during the question period.
The price reduction measure concerns low-income households and will impact 1,166,228 social customers, including 266,000 on post-payment plans and 889,361 on Woyofal plans, it states. This represents 85% of Senelec's domestic customers in the "low power" category.
As for low-power professionals, who consume between 0 and 50 kWh, they were billed at 163.81 CFA francs. "Under the current measure, it will decrease to 147.43 CFA francs, a reduction of 10%," explains the minister.
Birame Souleye Diop adds that they are currently finalizing the reduction in hydrocarbon prices. "We are putting the finishing touches on this in collaboration with technicians from the Ministry of Finance to ensure that there is no impact on subsidies," he says.
