Agriculture : les sols sénégalais sont malades, voici les causes et les remèdes
The Director General of the National Institute of Soil Science (INP), Alfred Kouly Tine, is raising the alarm about the very worrying state of Senegal's soils on the occasion of World Soil Day. In an interview with Le Soleil, he describes the land as "very fragile," depleted by erosion, acidification, salinization, and a widespread decline in organic matter.
According to the INP, soil fertility in Senegal is generally low due to a lack of essential nutrients. The causes are multiple: deforestation, unsuitable agricultural practices, disappearance of fallow land, unbalanced use of chemical fertilizers, excessive biomass export, climate change, wind and water erosion, as well as salinization in areas such as Sine-Saloum, Casamance, Niayes or the Senegal River Delta, lists the source interviewed by the national daily newspaper.
Solutions already deployed
To reverse the trend, the INP recommends several combined approaches: combating erosion, with the planting of suitable trees, the creation of windbreaks and the use of mulch; combating salinization via anti-salt dikes and tree species capable of regulating the saline water table; chemical restoration of soils, thanks to the "Soil Health" program.
This involves liming to reduce acidity, phosphatizing to correct severe phosphorus deficiencies, and strengthening organic matter, essential for improving water retention and reducing fertilizer loss through infiltration.
The expert concludes that there will be no food sovereignty without fertile soils. The National Institute of Petroleum (INP), initiator of the "Soil Health" program, is thus positioning itself as a central player in the national strategy. Restoring degraded land is, according to Tine, an essential condition for supporting agriculture that is productive, intensive, and sustainable.
