Filière chou : Mévente et concurrence étrangère, les maraîchers des Niayes interpellent le Gouvernement
Market gardeners in the Niayes region are facing an alarming situation with unsold cabbage production. Faced with this market "catastrophe," they are directly appealing to the government led by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
Aly Ndiaye, communications officer for the onion industry association, raised the alarm, emphasizing that this scenario is repeating itself. He recalled that in 2024, from December to May, market gardeners faced significant difficulties selling their harvests, even though they had taken out bank loans to invest.
Today, the cabbage industry is experiencing the same fate. Mr. Ndiaye is worried: "The market is completely filled with Moroccan and Guinean cabbages. These foreigners are killing our trade. They sell cabbage at prices lower than those set by the Senegalese."
Aly Ndiaye believes that the Senegalese government does not seem to be fully aware of the seriousness of this crisis. He is raising the alarm and calling on the government to come to the aid of Senegalese farmers to put an end to this foreign competition, which he considers unfair.
He insists that the role of the State should not be limited to subsidies: "The State should not be content with subsidies alone. It must also support producers so that they can sell their harvests. Without support, the subsidy would be useless. We must not accept foreigners coming to dictate their terms on the Senegalese market."
Aly Ndiaye is particularly appealing to Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and the Director of the Market Regulation Agency (ARM) to react quickly and resolve this situation which threatens the survival of market gardeners in Niayes.
