CAN Maroc 2025 : Mali–Tunisie, dix Aigles héroïques s’envolent vers les quarts
Reduced to ten men in the 26th minute after Woyo Coulibaly's expulsion, Mali pulled off a remarkable feat against Tunisia to secure their place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The Eagles will face Senegal in the next round.
In a hard-fought match, marked by intense physical play and numerous fouls on both sides, the Tunisians long believed they had done the hard part. In the 88th minute, Firas Chaouat opened the scoring, capitalizing on a hesitation in the Malian defense to beat goalkeeper Djigui Diarra.
But just as Tunisia seemed headed for qualification, the game took a dramatic turn in the dying seconds of stoppage time. Mali were awarded a penalty after Mariah handled the ball in the box. Lassine Sinayoko stepped up to take it and calmly converted to equalize in the 95th minute.
Extra time, lacking clear-cut chances, failed to separate the two teams. A penalty shootout was then necessary. In this contest, Djigui Diarra proved decisive, saving two Tunisian attempts and securing a heroic qualification for Mali (1-1, 3-2 on penalties).
Mentally strong and heroic despite being outnumbered, the Eagles of Mali secured their place in the quarter-finals where they will face Senegal.
