Finale CAN 2025 : Un Marocain devient viral... après une initiative pour intégrer le Maroc dans l'Union européenne
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final defeat at home against Senegal is still a bitter pill to swallow for some Moroccans. To protest the violence that followed the match, some Atlas Lions supporters want to leave Africa and move to the European Union.
The initiative was launched by an internet user named LazDeff.Jr on the social network X. He places his "Morocco - UEFA 2030" project within the spectrum of ambition. "Our interest in moving forward economically, in football, or outside of Europe is not new. We are not crazy, we are ambitious! People who are clear-headed in this country understand what I mean," he says.
In addition to its proximity to Spain via the Strait of Gibraltar, Morocco is the only African country with a physical border with a Spanish city, Ceuta, located in northern Morocco. "We have physical borders with the European Union and are 16 km from a European coast. We have a historical past in Europe; we are legitimate in applying for UEFA membership," he wrote in a post that has garnered nearly 100,000 views. His post also generated almost 400 comments, ranging from approval to, more often than not, mockery from other Africans.
In 1984, Morocco had already applied to join the European Communities, which were later replaced by the European Union. The application was submitted by King Hassan II of Morocco. It was rejected in October 1987.

C'est un échantillonage de chaque pays. C'est pareil dans tous les domaines, on ne peut pas être ensemble. Et puis il y a une coupe pour les européens, une coupe pour les arabes; à quand une coupe pour les africains, les vrais, pas ceux qui se disent africains pour avoir des voies à l'onu ou pour autre profit. En privé, ils n'aiment qu'on les appelle africain.
