Les joueurs et le jeu : Pape Gueye décisif, Édouard Mendy à la hauteur (Les notes)

Favorites against Sudan, Senegal lived up to expectations with a commanding victory over a tenacious Sudanese side. Falling behind early, Pape Thiaw's men had to dig deep to overcome a determined and fearless opponent. Pape Gueye, who scored twice (29th, 45th+5), was undoubtedly the man of the match, shining both defensively and offensively. In a defense that was sometimes shaky, Édouard Mendy also distinguished himself with several crucial saves that prevented a more difficult evening for the Lions.

Édouard Mendy: 8/10

Caught off guard by Abdallah's clinical strike for the opening goal, the Senegalese goalkeeper then kept his team in the game. In the 24th minute, he made a crucial save from a Sudanese shot that could have increased the scoreline. While his distribution with his feet occasionally caused some anxious moments, he redeemed himself early in the second half with an exceptional stop against a striker who was through on goal (47th minute). An excellent match for the Lions' last line of defense, who was often let down by his backline.

Krepin Diatta: 7/10

Very active from the outset, he made numerous runs down the right flank, combining well with Habib Diarra. Omnipresent in attack, he made a fine run in the 65th minute but lacked the final touch. Defensively, he distinguished himself with a crucial recovery tackle that prevented Sudan from reducing the deficit. A complete performance from the Senegalese full-back.

Moussa Niakhaté: 5/10

In a match where Sudan frequently used the wings, Moussa Niakhaté was rarely troubled. Composed and focused, the Olympique Lyonnais defender delivered a calm performance. Serious in his tackles and clean in his distribution, he put in a solid display without ever being truly tested.

Abdoulaye Seck: 5/10

Like his central defensive partner, Abdoulaye Seck had a relatively quiet evening. Powerful in duels and well-positioned, the former Casa Sports player delivered a solid performance. Less successful in his attacking runs, the Maccabi Haifa defender nevertheless remains in good form with the national team. A tough match.

Ismail Jakobs: 4/10

Caught out of position on Sudan's goal, Ismail Jakobs had a difficult start to the match against the dynamic Abdallah. Despite his tactical awareness, the Galatasaray defender didn't exude much composure. Replaced in the 53rd minute by El Hadji Malick Diouf, the latter proved more aggressive and decisive, initiating Senegal's third goal after a high press. A good performance off the bench for the West Ham player.

Idrissa Gana Gueye: 7/10

Aggressive, intelligent, and always making the right decisions, Idrissa Gana Gueye was once again invaluable. His experience and reading of the game allowed Senegal to better manage transitions. Crucial in winning back possession and controlling the tempo, the former Diambars player delivered a top-level performance.

Pape Gueye: 9/10

After an initial, harmless attempt (27th minute), he showed more inspiration two minutes later, equalizing with his left foot from a perfect Sadio Mané cross (29th minute). Just before halftime, he gave Senegal the lead with a superb curling shot after a pass from Nicolas Jackson (45th+5 minute). Omnipresent in midfield, the Villarreal midfielder delivered a flawless performance, enabling Senegal to overcome Sudan. He was replaced by Ismaël Pathé Ciss (86th minute).

Habib Diarra: 6/10

Deployed in the playmaker role, he started the match well. His directness and skill on the ball allowed him to create danger in the Sudanese half. Influential in midfield without being decisive, he was replaced by Lamine Camara (73rd minute), who was unable to turn the tide.

Sadio Mané: 6/10

After Sudan opened the scoring, he created Senegal's first chance, but without success. Very intelligent in his play and valuable in his defensive work, the Lions' captain disrupted the opposition's build-up play. While not spectacular, he was decisive, notably with a superb assist for Ibrahim Mbaye's third goal (77th minute).

Nicolas Jackson: 4/10

As in previous matches, he had a difficult start. Clumsy and lacking inspiration, the striker missed several opportunities. He redeemed himself, however, just before halftime by providing the assist for Pape Gueye's second goal. Booked, he was replaced by Boulaye Dia (53rd minute), who missed a clear chance in the 63rd minute.

Ismaïla Sarr: 4/10

He could have equalized early in the 8th minute, but his shot was saved by the Sudanese goalkeeper. His luck faltered, and he had a penalty and then a goal disallowed. In the second half, he struggled to influence the game and was replaced by Ibrahim Mbaye (74th minute). Three minutes later, the 17-year-old prodigy sealed the victory for Senegal thanks to his speed and composure. Another decisive contribution from the young talent.
