Bentaleb Sow, the special advisor to the President of the Republic, spoke out to, he said, "reestablish the truth" about the altercation he allegedly had with a police officer near the presidential palace.
Indeed, it is reported that he arrived on foot, suitcases in hand, and tried to use a corridor forbidden to pedestrians. The GMI agents on duty reportedly informed him of the prohibition and asked him to state his identity. He refused to comply, provoking a heated exchange.
However, the head of state's special advisor denied the article published by L'Observateur on the affair. "This article, riddled with inaccuracies and untruths, attributed to me statements I never made and behavior that cannot be attributed to me. I was portrayed in a caricatured manner, in a story whose very time, at which the incident is supposed to have occurred, is not accurate," he stated in an article shared on his Facebook page.
Then, Bentaleb Sow gave his own version of events: "A police motorcyclist, not assigned to this sector and supposed to be escorting a member of the government, began to stop me with unjustified abruptness, preventing me from passing through, which, in reality, was not at all. I responded calmly, but with the firmness required to defend the law," the special advisor recounts in his text.
Mr. Sow stated that there was no disturbance, no outrage, and no refusal to comply. And the officers present during the incident even called him by name, he said. This proves, he said, that his identity was perfectly known to them.
"So I didn't have to run, and no one asked me to," he emphasizes, assuring that he has never used his position to impose anything. Because, he says, he is "above all, a citizen who respects the laws and the forces of law and order, aware that any authority, however high, remains subject to a duty to set an example."
Regarding the scale of the affair, Mr. Sow said he imposed silence on himself after the incident, out of a sense of moderation and responsibility. "But given the persistence of these false allegations, it seemed necessary to me to re-establish the truth, without passion or controversy, but with clarity and serenity," he said.
What about the police officer with whom he had the unpleasant exchange? "I'm only denouncing the isolated behavior of an individual, and the excesses of a certain press that is quick to publish before verifying," he says. For him, when you move in the circle of power, it's not uncommon to be the target of attacks, sometimes unfair, often calculated.
