Senegal celebrates the 66th anniversary of its independence this Saturday, April 4th. This year, Thiès is at the heart of the official festivities, alongside other regional capitals, around the theme "Defense and Security Forces, Partners of the Youth Olympic Games, Dakar-2026".

The main ceremony, scheduled to take place in the railway capital, will be presided over by the Head of State, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, in his capacity as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. The program, established by the Ministry of the Armed Forces, includes a military parade with the awarding of decorations, the screening of a film related to the theme, and a civilian and military parade on Caen Avenue starting at 8:00 a.m.

In other regions of the country, the ceremonies are organised under the supervision of the military zone commanders, in coordination with the local administrative authorities, in accordance with the national arrangements put in place.

According to the Ministry of the Armed Forces, the choice of theme is part of the preparations for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, a historic event that Senegal is preparing to host for the first time in Africa. It highlights the central role of the defense and security forces in the success of this event, particularly in the face of security and logistical challenges.

The April 4th parade in Thiès promises to be particularly spectacular. A total of 25 civilian groups, representing 1,293 participants, will open the parade. They will be followed by an air show involving several bases, before a naval review showcasing various assets of the Senegalese Navy.

The motorized component will see the participation of 268 vehicles, 106 motorcycles, 8 boats and 13 quad bikes. The traditional bayonet drill, performed by members of the presidential guard, will be a highlight of the ceremony.

In addition, 1,174 students from military and paramilitary schools will march in the parade, followed by 3,358 military and paramilitary personnel. The ceremony will also include the presentation of honorary distinctions in recognition of services rendered to the nation.
