Badara Gadiaga : Thierno Bocoum dénonce un « abus prolongé » et une « liberté mutilée »
The release under judicial supervision of activist and columnist Badara Gadiaga, after more than 150 days in detention, has sparked anger from Thierno Bocoum, president of the AGIR-LES LEADERS movement. While he expressed satisfaction at seeing an "innocent man released from prison," he described the judicial decision as "an injustice that, in other forms, continues to unfold."
Thierno Bocoum, who had campaigned for Gadiaga's release, expressed his "deep unease" with the conditions of his release from prison. He lamented that the freedom granted was "under surveillance, conditional, constrained by restrictions, and ultimately devoid of substance."
The president of AGIR-LES LEADERS specifically pointed to the constraints imposed on Badara Gadiaga: the wearing of an electronic bracelet, travel restrictions, the temporary ban on participating in the Diakarlo program, the very program for which he was arrested.
According to Mr. Bocoum, "we are being told he is being released, but he is being released with an electronic bracelet... In other words, he is being released from the place of detention but kept under control in public spaces."
According to Thierno Bocoum, these conditions confirm the political, rather than legal, nature of the case. He insists that freedom of expression is not a secondary right. "Preventing a man from speaking after imprisoning him for what he said is to acknowledge that the problem was never legal but political," he stated.
He directly appeals to the judicial authorities, reminding them that their mission is "neither to discipline consciences nor to silence critical voices." Mr. Bocoum categorically rejects what he perceives as a "subjugation of freedom" and a "pedagogy of fear," demanding that Badara Gadiaga be fully free if he is.
He concluded his speech by praising Badara Gadiaga's "dignified, consistent and deeply principled behavior," who would "never have begged for freedom, much less accepted a mutilated version of it."
