Bignona : le dépotoir de Tobor bientôt un créneau générateur d’emplois et d’engrais biologique
In Niamone, in the Bignona department, the Tobor landfill has long been at the heart of a heated controversy. Located just a few hundred meters from homes and a primary school, this site has become a focal point of local anger. Unbearable odors, toxic fumes, and the risk of groundwater pollution: residents, supported by NGOs, have denounced a landfill deemed "illegal," established without consultation or an environmental impact assessment.
The protests took a dramatic turn: truck blockades, clashes with law enforcement, and arrests of young demonstrators. Amnesty International Senegal, RADDHO, and LSDH even issued joint statements demanding the immediate closure of the site, which they described as an environmental and administrative scandal.
A radical project championed by the mayor
Elected in 2022, the mayor of Niamone, Atab Badji, wants to turn the page. With the support of Sonaged and technical partners, he has announced a groundbreaking project: transforming Tobor into an industrial hub for waste recovery.
On a 40-hectare site, a modern factory will be built, comprising more than twenty warehouses. It will produce 10,000 tons of organic fertilizer and activated charcoal for the medical sector each year. The project is expected to generate 600 direct jobs and nearly 300 indirect jobs, offering a viable alternative to youth unemployment.
"Young people leave Niamone for the promised land, when it's the same job they'll end up doing abroad. That's what we want to offer them here, or better, with a good salary," says the mayor.
This project aims to be a dual response: to both social distress and the ecological crisis. Where residents once saw a threat to their health and future, Atab Badji now promises an industrial opportunity capable of transforming a reviled site into an engine of sustainable development for Bignona and the entire Casamance region.
