Like other parts of the country, the Fatick region celebrated the 66th anniversary of independence this Saturday. The commemoration was marked by a call for reflection and mobilization, particularly in light of the 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) that Senegal is preparing to host.

During this celebration, the governor of the region, Ngoné Cissé, was keen to emphasize the profound significance of this event.

“This commemoration, far from being a folkloric event, is a powerful reminder that independence is not an end in itself. It is a perpetual quest, a constant effort. We must look with clarity at what we still need to correct, strengthen and transform,” she said.

The 2026 Youth Olympic Games at the heart of the issues

Addressing the 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG), the governor highlighted the historical importance of this event for the African continent.

"For the first time in its history, Africa will host the Youth Olympic Games," she recalled, before adding that Senegal is called upon to demonstrate its organizational capacity, its institutional maturity, its mobilization strength as well as the performance of its defense and security forces.

In this context, the theme chosen this year, "Defense and security forces support the 2026 Youth Olympic Games", takes on its full meaning.

A security and organizational challenge

For Ngoné Cissé, welcoming the world is one thing, but doing so in order, safety and excellence is another.

Through the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, Senegal intends to show its true face: that of a country of peace, organization and confidence.

The defense and security forces will thus be mobilized to protect, prevent, and reassure the population. In a world marked by numerous uncertainties, their role will, according to her, be crucial.

A national mobilization is expected

Beyond the celebration, this independence anniversary is seen as a moment to look to the future. The authorities are calling for collective mobilization to successfully meet the challenge of organizing the 2026 Youth Olympic Games and to strengthen the gains of national sovereignty.
