Thiès : l'héritage du Pr Mamadou Mourtalla Kâ salué par la communauté universitaire
The Health Training and Research Unit (UFR) of the Iba Der Thiam University (UIDT) of Thiès organised, this Wednesday June 3, a congress devoted to chronic non-communicable diseases in tropical environments, marked by a vibrant tribute to Professor Mamadou Mourtalla Kâ, the first Director of the institution.
On this occasion, the first Rector of UIDT, Professor Papa Ibra Samb, praised the initiative, which he considered exemplary. According to him, tributes should be paid to individuals while they are still alive so that they can appreciate the impact of their work.
“Tributes and testimonials must be given while people are still alive. We must celebrate living people,” he declared, before recalling the crucial role played by Professor Mamadou Mourtalla Kâ in the conception and establishment of the Faculty of Health Sciences. He emphasized that Professor Kâ dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the project, participating in both the development of the educational program and the establishment of the faculty. Professor Samb stated that Thiès, Senegal, and indeed all of Africa owe him a debt of gratitude for his commitment to medical training on the continent.
Visibly moved, Professor Mamadou Mourtalla Kâ expressed his gratitude to the current leaders of the UFR and the entire team who initiated this tribute. He also paid a heartfelt tribute to Professor Papa Ibra Samb, stating that without his support, none of this would have been possible.
Looking back on the beginnings of the venture, he recalled that the UFR (Faculty of Medicine) was born from almost nothing, driven by the desire to help alleviate the overcrowding of the country's only medical school at the time, that of UCAD (Cheikh Anta Diop University). His greatest satisfaction, he confided, is seeing hundreds of doctors trained in Thiès today practicing competently in Africa and Europe. He concluded by urging his successors to maintain this momentum and stay the course toward excellence.
The current Director of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Professor Mamadou Lamine Cissé, highlighted the institution's remarkable growth. Founded in 2008 with an initial class of 66 Senegalese medical students, the Faculty now boasts 2,543 students from 24 different nationalities. Since its inception, it has trained over 580 medical doctors, more than 50 pharmacists, as well as 72 nurses and 55 midwives.
Taking advantage of this platform, Professor Cissé advocated for the establishment of a military health school in Thiès. According to him, the city possesses all the necessary assets, including a military base, a military hospital, and an officers' training school. He believes such a project would contribute to strengthening training opportunities while also helping to decentralize healthcare and higher education institutions, which are currently heavily concentrated in Dakar.
