Horticultire : Des défis majeurs liés à la commercialisation, à la fluctuation des prix, à la maitrise des coûts de production, au stockage
The evaluation of the 2024-2025 horticultural campaign and the preparation of the 2025-2026 marketing campaign were the subject of a meeting of the Thiès Regional Development Committee (CRD), chaired on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, by the deputy governor in charge of development.
Ababacar Sadikh Niang thus praised the significant contribution of the actors in Thiès in achieving food sovereignty by 2050.
He recalled that the Market Regulation Agency (ARM), under the supervision of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, has implemented, for the 2024-2025 horticultural campaign, a strategy for regulating strategic sectors, such as onions, potatoes, carrots, corn and cabbage among others.
"The Thiès region, as a major hub for horticultural production, must continue its efforts to consolidate the national momentum," he said.
Indeed, horticulture is a strategic sub-sector that contributes significantly to food sovereignty, job creation and export revenues.
The 2024-2025 horticultural campaign was marked by record productions in sectors such as onion, potato, carrot, corn and cabbage, with satisfactory yields due to a favorable climate, better availability of inputs, investment and the adoption of good agricultural practices by producers.
This notable performance, notes Ababacar Sadikh Niang, translates into impressive national production volumes: 450,000 t for onions, 245,000 t for potatoes, 45,000 t for carrots and 273,367 t for cabbage (Directorate of Horticulture - 2025).
However, he notes that despite the promising results achieved, it is important to note the persistence of certain major challenges related to marketing, price fluctuations, controlling production costs, storage, logistics and structured market presence, which determine the operator's income and the sustainability of these sectors.
Thus, says the deputy governor, the end of the 2024-2025 campaign is a crucial moment to take stock of the situation, identify the challenges to be met, assess price formation and gather the concerns of frontline actors at the territorial level.
This is the whole point of the CRD organised by the ARM, in collaboration with the Horticulture Directorate, which aims to evaluate the results obtained, to identify the main difficulties encountered during the 2024-2025 campaign and to prepare the 2025-2026 marketing campaign.
It is also a question of establishing an accurate economic assessment, collecting testimonies and feedback from local stakeholders, capitalizing on field data to refine regulatory mechanisms and strategies and, at the same time, ensuring the security of producers' incomes and the stability of the market.
However, the implementation of this mission requires the promotion of a dialogue between producers, traders, processors, heads of technical services, territorial executives, administrative authorities and regulatory bodies, for better coordination of actions.
