Affaire Ngoné Saliou : interrogations sur le rôle du CNRA
Host Ngoné Saliou, who works for Sans limites, made remarks that sparked controversy. By attempting to attack Macky Sall, she ultimately targeted an entire community. This earned her several complaints and outrage. Both the media outlet and the host subsequently apologized. But what is questionable here is the attitude of the National Audiovisual Regulatory Council (CNRA). Since the beginning of this affair, the CNRA, headed by Mamadou Oumar Ndiaye, has remained silent.
However, it is up to the regulatory and self-regulatory bodies to act or call to order according to their powers. Here in Senegal, the role falls to the CNRA and CORED. However, CORED had announced the suspension of its activities due to lack of funding following the blocking of press aid. This body is therefore out of the question. However, the CNRA is still operating.
However, its stance is open to reflection. The CNRA seems less responsive, and some even accuse it of lacking balance. Indeed, when Amadou Ba and Badara Gadiaga clashed on the TFM set, the CNRA issued a statement calling television stations to order.
"The National Audiovisual Regulatory Council has recently noted that audiovisual media are often used as a platform by people calling themselves or describing themselves as columnists, to utter insults and insults against public figures or to make comments likely to harm the Institutions of the Republic and public morality, as well as the dignity, image, honor and reputation of the people targeted and/or attacked."
Yet the Ngoné Saliou affair is anything but a surprise. Given his stance, we knew something would go wrong. It was just a matter of time. Despite this, the CNRA did not deem it necessary to anticipate this with a call to order. Now that the mistake has been made, the CNRA still feels no need to play its part. Moreover, the press release issued on March 25th followed an appeal by Pastef, the ruling party.
Pastef, which had denounced the misuse of airtime, accused political parties of engaging in attacks, insults, defamation, and slander, "under the cover of the status of columnists." "These public insults, uttered and tolerated by the complicit silence of certain editorial staff, raise legitimate questions about possible collusion between certain media outlets and these insulting columnists," the statement added.
Based on this observation, Pastef had firmly called on the National Audiovisual Regulatory Council (CNRA) and the Council for the Observation of Ethics and Professional Conduct in the Media (CORED) to fully assume their regulatory responsibilities. Following this statement, the CNRA issued a press release reminding the media of the need to put an end to these abuses.
Following the CNRA, the CDEPS issued a press release warning against any political manipulation of the regulatory body. The press bosses reminded the CNRA of the need to remain independent while urging it to begin by respecting its legal obligations.
In summary, all of the above shows that there is concern, if not mistrust, towards the CNRA, which should react as quickly as possible to restore its image.
