[Grain de Sel] Rentrée 2025 : les enfants apprennent, les parents s’endettent (par Betu Wurus)
The shouting has stopped. The walls are breathing, and so are the parents. Yes, classes have reopened, and it's probably the only time of year when silence comes at such a high price. Because behind every tightly packed schoolbag, there's a groaning wallet. The start of the school year is a bit like a military victory. We smile for the camera, but we count the wounded afterward. The children are at school and the parents are on the verge of overdraft. Between registration fees, uniforms, books, transportation, and the cafeteria, every bill is another ordeal.
School is often talked about as the key to the future. But at this rate, you'd first need a key to open your bank account.
The government, for its part, is celebrating because the children have returned to school. True. But the parents, for their part, have taken the path of debt. The irony is that everyone is smiling. The students, happy to be back with their friends. The teachers, resigned. The parents, exhausted but relieved. It's the most shared form of national hypocrisy, since we celebrate the start of the school year as a rebirth, while it increasingly resembles an economic hemorrhage.
In the end, children will learn to read, and parents will learn to survive.
