Khalifa, Barth, Sonko et le karma
Karma, in its popular sense, is the idea that our past actions, good or bad, eventually catch up with us, like a boomerang thrown into the universe. It's a kind of immanent justice, where the choices we make set the course for what we will reap later.
In Senegal, this notion seems to be strikingly embodied in the recent political trajectory of Barthélémy Dias and Khalifa Sall, who today appear to be victims of this karma in the face of the surprise election of Abass Fall, candidate of Pastef - a minority party in the Municipal Council - to the mayoralty of Dakar.
Barthélémy Dias was elected mayor of the capital in January 2022. While his pugnacity and personal merits played a role, his success owes much to Ousmane Sonko, leader of Pastef. At the time, Mr. Sonko, a rising figure in the opposition, could have run for mayor or nominated a candidate from his party. Pastef, with its popular roots, would likely have won. But Mr. Sonko chose the strategy of unity within the Yewwi Askan Wi coalition, supporting Mr. Dias and his ally Khalifa Sall. The three men then embodied, at least on the surface, a solid alliance, appearing side by side at Yewwi's almost weekly press conferences or at various opposition demonstrations. This period was a veritable political honeymoon: Mr. Dias, in a spirit of openness, had even integrated figures close to Mr. Sonko, such as Captain Seydina Touré and Guy Marius Sagna, into his team.
But this fraternity has not stood the test of time. As the 2024 presidential election approached, the personal ambitions of each party and Mr. Sonko's legal troubles cracked the alliance. Takhawu Senegal, led by Khalifa Sall and Barthélémy Dias, distanced itself from a Sonko who had become cumbersome. A striking sequence illustrates this turnaround: when journalist Pape Alé Niang questioned Khalifa Sall about his participation in the presidential election, the latter coldly replied "Na bokk rek" ("the main thing is that I participate"), betraying a personal ambition to the detriment of the solidarity of yesteryear. For his part, Mr. Dias has made numerous cynical digs at Sonko and noisily broke with Abass Fall, who was his deputy.
Today, the election of Abass Fall, Sonko's fervent lieutenant within Pastef, to the Dakar mayoralty, sounds like a sort of historical snub.
This outcome invites the Senegalese political class to reflect. Pastef, despite the criticisms that can be leveled at it, stands out for a rare consistency: a sense of honor, loyalty, and unwavering conviction. During the years of embers in opposition, marked by arrests and imprisonments, the party remained united, without notable defections.
This resilience has rehabilitated values often devalued in traditional politics: loyalty, honor, consistency. And the Senegalese people, particularly sensitive to these qualities, have understood this well.
Conversely, many leaders of the former regime have turned their backs on Macky Sall since his departure. The Khalifa Sall-Barthélémy Dias alliance has also failed to withstand the recent setbacks of their political party. It is also said that Mr. Sall somewhat undermined his former protégé during this electoral process.
Karma, they say, is unforgiving. In politics as elsewhere, it reminds us that betrayed alliances and forgotten selfless gestures always end up weighing in the balance. PASTEF, by winning in Dakar, embodies this lesson: loyalty and conviction, even in adversity, can overturn opportunistic calculations. A word to the wise...

Next,Show must go on.
