The paradox is striking. Ten years after its creation by a group of tax and land inspectors, Pastef has become—figures bear this out—the leading party in Senegal: it holds the presidency, controls the National Assembly with an overwhelming majority of 130 out of 165 seats, and remains, sociologically, the most representative party in the country. Yet, the party founded by Ousmane Sonko still gives the impression of being… in the opposition.
For several weeks, internal tensions have been erupting into the open. The appointment of Ms. Aminata Touré as coordinator of the "Diomaye President" coalition has triggered a deep crisis, reviving suspicions of a rift at the top between Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko. Within the party ranks, voices are diverging, communication is becoming muddled, and the cohesion that was once the party's strength is faltering.
The admission of Ayib Daffé, one of the party's long-standing members, speaks volumes: "In my political experience, I've never encountered this kind of situation." Without resorting to catastrophism, he acknowledges real "difficulties," while assuring everyone that the Patriots are "prepared" to weather the storm. This is a way of putting into perspective a crisis that others prefer to dramatize.
While the MP was attempting to calm the situation, prominent figures such as Waly Diouf Bodiang, Fadilou Keita, Khadija Mahecor Diouf, and Cheikh Bara Ndiaye, among others, were sounding the alarm. They openly denounced the "unorthodox practices" of the head of state and Mimi Touré's inclusive strategy, which they accused of opening "a back door" for actors within the "system." The director general of the Port of Dakar even spoke of a maneuver to "seize power," a sign of the now entrenched mistrust.
The conflict has also shifted to a new arena: the digital realm. Over 40,000 internet users claiming to be "pro-Sonko" unsubscribed from President Diomaye Faye's accounts over the weekend. A symbolic act, but one laden with meaning. Never before had the activist base displayed such blatant division.
Consequently, the opposition is jubilant. They observe a ruling party acting as if it were still poised to overthrow a regime. Worse, some wonder if Pastef, dissolved yesterday by Macky Sall and then reinstated through amnesty, hasn't mentally remained in opposition. The image of the president being greeted in Luanda by a crowd wearing t-shirts bearing his image—and not that of the party—has further sown confusion: a symbolic break or mere protocol?
One thing is certain. According to press reports, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye does not appear ready to part ways with Mimi Touré. However, Pastef party says it no longer recognizes itself in the actions of the former Prime Minister.
But can the head of state govern sustainably with a team that his own party disavows?
The question remains open. And that is undoubtedly where the future lies. Pastef may not be doomed to be an opposition party… but it could very well become a party of opponents among themselves.
