Ousmane Sonko : La mixtape de trop ? (Par Adama Ndiaye)
Ousmane Sonko possesses an innate sense of spectacle. One cannot fully grasp his personality without understanding this facet: the man loves being the center of attention. He enjoys attracting crowds and breaking view records on the social media platforms he adores, far more than he enjoys stuffy press conferences or interviews with the traditional press.
Since Pastef came to power, his style has been strangely reminiscent of rappers who alternate between their official, very mainstream albums and their mixtapes where they give free rein to their raw inspiration. Mr. Sonko thus seems to be splitting in two. On the one hand, we have the Prime Minister of official speeches, addressing agricultural, transportation, or economic issues; on the other, the party leader who reconnects with his hardcore base to deliver pointed punchlines and take a few political figures to task.
But here's the thing: not everyone can be Jay-Z or Masta Ace. By trying to do both things, the flow loses its edge.
From the King Fahd Palace to the Grand Théâtre, from the Terrameeting to his latest video conference, the playlist is getting bogged down. It's always the same sample, the same refrain hammered home ad nauseam, a monotonous melody bordering on rambling. Yesterday, just like on day one, he rehashed the verse about "disagreements with the Presidency" and grumbled about the "dividers within the coalition." On sovereignty? Not a new note, not an original chord. We were expecting a symphony of change; instead, we got a broken record. We're told that repetition is educational; here, it's mostly soporific. At some point, he's going to have to make some radical decisions on all these issues, especially regarding his relationship with the Palace.
Ultimately, only his fans—those “great industrialists of praise,” to borrow Philippe Muray’s phrase—still seem to be fooled. Once again, the zealots will hail him as a genius and a truthful orator, proclaiming him the “greatest man” in Senegalese political history.

But at this rate, by listening to a record that seems scratched, even the most fervent admirers and praisers may end up doubting the relevance of their own incantations.
