Parlons des lacrymogènes utilisés à l’UCAD
For several days now, the situation has remained tense at Cheikh Anta Diop University. Master's students are staging daily protests demanding the payment of their scholarships. These protests have led to clashes with the police, which now last almost all day. While the security forces' efforts to maintain order are commendable, there is cause for concern regarding the tear gas grenades used in these demonstrations. Indeed, for over a week, it has been observed that the grenades are posing a real problem for the university community. Tears, runny noses, nausea, and difficulty breathing are being reported daily.
Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) has between 80,000 and 100,000 students, according to statistics. If we add the 3,000 teachers (1,500 permanent and 1,500 adjunct) and the 1,500 administrative staff, plus visitors, we're looking at at least 100,000 people. That's the size of a small city. Except that in this case, it's a city with a particularly small area. This means that the population density per square kilometer is enormous. This close proximity alone is enough to pose a health problem for some.
However, within this population, there are asthmatics and others suffering from respiratory illnesses. Some have irritated eyes from contact with this smoke. We witnessed a young asthmatic girl in distress in the "corridor of death." She needed the physical support of a boy to remain standing. The girl was being helped to use an inhaler. What is unusual about this scene is that it occurred around 1 p.m., on a day when the demonstrations had ended around 11 a.m. This means that two hours after the demonstrations, the corridor still retained an unbearable stench. Until 8 p.m., and even the following day, the mere passing of a motorist is enough to release a pungent, almost inhalable odor, whether from dust or even a slight breeze.
Some UCAD agents have been granted sick leave, others who have fragile health are forced to stay home simply because the tear gas is unbreathable.
It was thought that UCAD staff were the only victims. But in reality, the impact extends far beyond them. "I'm at Fann Hospital, but even there, we're having trouble breathing," confided an acquaintance. If hospital staff are suffering from the tear gas grenades, what about the patients? It's worth remembering that UCAD has two health facilities (IMPS and the COUD medical service), not to mention certain departments within the Faculty of Medicine, all of which receive patients.
This means that there is not only an urgent need to respond to this student strike, but also to review the tear gas grenades used in this space with a high concentration of people, including individuals suffering from respiratory illnesses.

N'a goore.
