Dr. Yoro Dia's critique, which presents the sovereignty of President Diomaye and Prime Minister Sonko as a simple "inferiority complex" and a "desire for recognition," is a superficial reading that ignores the principles of strategic diplomacy. Talking to a historically dominant power like France is in no way a sign of submission, but rather a pragmatic and intelligent choice.
A sudden and impulsive break with France would not only be immature, but also detrimental to the Senegalese diaspora and our own economy. Dialogue is the most effective way to defend national interests. History offers numerous examples, such as President Abraham Lincoln. During the Civil War, even as his army's victory was imminent, Lincoln secretly met with Confederate President Jefferson Davis to negotiate terms of peace. His goal was not to capitulate, but to ensure the reconstruction of the Union on solid foundations, without creating resentment that could lead to future conflicts. This approach, initially misunderstood by his own party, was later hailed as an act of political and military genius.
It is this same logic that guides Senegal today. Exchanges with France are not a sign of weakness, but a demonstration of strength and maturity. They allow us to redefine the terms of our relationship, renegotiate defense agreements, and lay the foundations for a truly balanced partnership. Sovereignty is not a withdrawal into ourselves, but an affirmation of our ability to engage in dialogue as equals with the entire world, including our oldest partners.
