Et si Sonko était un Messie de notre temps ?( Par par Abdoulaye Dieng, entrepreneur)
Sometimes, at pivotal moments in history, a figure emerges seemingly unpredictable, yet through consistency and integrity, becomes a guiding light for a people searching for direction. Ousmane Sonko is one such man. He was not born into the corridors of power, nor into any political elite. Coming from the public service, driven by a rigor of conviction rarely seen in our political landscape, he has established himself as a credible and steadfast voice in a fragile political environment. And what if, beyond the usual divisions, Sonko were a messiah for our time?
His rise to power owes much to his frank and methodical approach. He named what many no longer dared to say: injustice elevated to a method of governance, impunity protecting the powerful, and systemic corruption diverting billions of dollars of public funds. By denouncing the grip of an oligarchy that had conflated the state with private interests, Sonko reiterated a simple truth: no country can achieve sustainable development if it tolerates predation. This consistent and uncalculated message resonated particularly strongly with a generation weary of compromises and searching for solid role models.
This unwavering resolve did not spare him. Political hostility, accusations, attempts at exclusion: he faced it all. Yet, far from weakening him, these trials made his commitment clearer. Many understood that the real target was not an individual, but the fight he was waging for justice, integrity, and truth. When the Diomaye-Sonko duo returned to the forefront of the political scene, it was not a return for revenge, but a confirmation of the already firmly established public trust.
This confidence was brilliantly expressed on November 8th, at a rally of unprecedented size. The immense crowd gathered that day was responding neither to a slogan nor to a passing emotion: it was expressing a profound commitment to the fight against arbitrariness and corruption, as well as to a vision of a restored state. This moment conveyed, without slogans, that Sonko was not merely pursuing political ambition: he was embodying a demand that the people recognized as their own.
And this is one of the fundamental mechanisms of history: a Messiah—in the moral and symbolic sense—exists only because a people supports him. He does not advance alone. He illuminates the path, but it is the people who walk. He points out a way, but it is the people who open it. Support is not a favor: it is the very condition of his mission. Without popular support, he is merely a man. With it, he becomes a conscience capable of guiding a collective transformation.
Yet, Sonko never presents himself as a savior. His conception of power rests on restraint, transparency, and responsibility. He reiterates that no one will change this country in place of its people, and that national renewal requires a collective commitment. This stance, devoid of any temptation toward a personality cult, further strengthens the bond of trust that unites him with his supporters.
In the history of nations, there is always a moment when a figure embodies the deepest aspirations of a people. Mandela was that figure for South Africa, Sankara for Burkina Faso, Gandhi for India. These men were not perfect; they were simply capable of awakening something greater than themselves. Every people eventually recognizes a “Messiah of their time,” not in a religious sense, but as a conscience that illuminates their path when their bearings falter. Senegal seems to be living through this moment, and November 8th was its most striking demonstration.
Ousmane Sonko is neither a saint nor a man without flaws. But for a significant portion of the population, he has become the symbol of a new era: that of a Senegal that refuses to be subservient, fights injustice, and demands an end to corruption. And if the Messiah of our time is not the one who transforms a people, but the one who empowers them to rediscover their own strength, then yes, Sonko can be seen as a Messiah of our time.
