Hommage à un Éminent Intellectuel : Le Professeur Abdou Salam Fall nous a quitté pour toujours (Par Serigne Mansour Sy Djamil)
It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Professor Abdou Salam Fall, a renowned academic and respected sociologist, who had a profound impact on intellectual and
politics of our country.
Born in Gaé, in the Walo region, the famous birthplace of Seydi Haaj Malick Sy, Professor Fall was one of the pioneers of the Bes Du Ñakk movement, alongside Oussou Sané, Aliou Diack, Mbaye Seye…. A dedicated educator and professor emeritus, he influenced generations of students with his vast erudition, altruism and patriotism. He passionately mentored the youth responding to the national call, actively participating in the creation of our citizen manifesto, brilliantly reducing a complex 45-page document to 7 pages to facilitate reading and dissemination.
Within the Bes Du Ñakk board, he encouraged a culture of open debate on various issues, regardless of their complexity, establishing the spirit of the great democratic parties through his dialectical and inclusive approach.
His friendship with Serigne Mansour Sy Djamil reflects a shared vision for Senegal's development. Together, they launched numerous initiatives, including Inond'Action, to combat the devastating floods of 2008 and 2009 in Dakar. As an active member of the Association des Éclaireurs du Sénégal, he was able to guide the project, even in the most difficult contexts, such as during his stay in Mboro.
A fervent patriot, Professor Fall temporarily put his academic studies on hold to devote three years to activism within And Jëf. His skills were invaluable in structuring Bes Du Ñakk, strengthening its presence throughout all regions of Senegal.
His significant contribution to the National Conference and his work on the Scientific Council, alongside respected figures such as Amadou-Mahtar Mbow, Ousmane Tanor Dieng, Cheikh Amidou Kane, Mamadou Toure, and Moustapha Niass, were praised by all participants. During these conferences, he was the main organizer of citizen consultations across Senegal, ensuring broad participation in the collective reflection.
A committed, pragmatic, and altruistic man of the field, he always encouraged constructive internal debates, guiding decisions toward action. He eased the burden on the most vulnerable while combining academic research and social interventions. His affable personality and constant smile allowed him to excel in debates, demonstrating relevance and courtesy.
Professor Fall passed away suddenly in Saint-Louis, while on a mission to address critical social issues facing our community. His passing, which occurred during a downpour in Dakar, is a reminder of his unwavering commitment to the most disadvantaged during the rainy season.
May Allah, in His infinite Mercy, welcome Professor Abdou Salam Fall into His Paradise, illuminate his final resting place and surround him with His Salam.
