For decades, Senegalese political life was punctuated by "economic tours" resembling electoral caravans. Behind the pretext of development, the same charade invariably played out: a deployment of colossal resources, mobilizations financed with lavish displays of folklore, and a saturation of the public sphere designed to simulate unanimous popular support. This decorum, as costly as it was ephemeral, has just been shattered under the leadership of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
By choosing a low-key approach for his visit to Casamance, the Head of State is making a radical break with tradition. Where his predecessors encouraged honor guards and crowds transported by bus, President Faye offered a polite but firm refusal.
Even when faced with elected officials from his own coalition, eager to show off their militant strength, the instruction remained the same: no folklore, no superfluous spending.
This decision marks the end of the era of representation and the beginning of one of efficiency. By foregoing artificial public appearances, the President not only preserves public funds, but above all restores the dignity of the presidential office, freeing it from base political maneuvering.
This renunciation of pomp and circumstance is not a retreat, but an opening. By eliminating the noise of folklore, the Head of State frees up space for active listening. His approach is based on a new paradigm: direct dialogue with key stakeholders and the people, far removed from chanted slogans and banners glorifying him.
The challenge here is to address the economic and social emergencies with concrete solutions, discussed at a human level. This represents a true revolution in public action: the President no longer comes to be seen, he comes to see, understand, and act.
This epistemological shift speaks directly to a crucial segment of the population: the silent majority. These citizens, often distanced from activist circles and lucrative mobilizations, observe and await results. For them, the dignity of public office is not measured by the number of placards waved, but by the relevance of public policies and the integrity of those who implement them.
In these times of economic austerity, this choice of moderation sends a strong signal to the people. The "Diomaye Style" outlines the contours of a modern presidency, stripped of its post-colonial trappings, and resolutely focused on the essential: serving the citizen, without embellishment or artifice.
