Mimi Touré et Aida Mbodj ne valent pas une prière au… (Par Abdou Karim DIARRA)
Paris is well worth a Mass. But Aminata Touré and Aïda Mbodj are not worth a prayer at the…Palace on Avenue Senghor. Let's first consider the expression that announces our attack, to remain within journalistic jargon. According to Wikipedia, this expression alludes to the second conversion to Catholicism of Henry of Navarre, undertaken in order to become king (Henry IV of France), on July 25, 1593. The Mass in question here describes either the obligation of a good Catholic to attend Mass regularly, or a special Mass that involves the coronation. Although the attribution of this witticism to Henry himself is apocryphal, historians agree that the motives for his conversion were almost entirely political. Therefore, everything surrounding the latest developments in a fearless struggle that is brewing at the highest level of power is purely political. The triggering effects are concentrated on the singular and largely uninteresting figures of Aminata Touré, or rather Mimi Touré, and Aissatou Mbodj, or rather Aida Mbodj. These two figures, at the end of their political cycle, after navigating the political waters that have accompanied Senegal's political journey to the present day, must not be the cause of the destruction of a political model that is unique across Africa and the world. By accepting to be the foundation of a political disaster, of the potential destruction of this model, by positioning themselves between the two men, Mimi Touré and Aida Mbodj are playing Cassandra. Given their political backgrounds, their stances should have played a role in mediating between President Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, two men the same age as their sons. Today, Mimi and Aida find themselves on the wrong side of history, which is unfolding as a political drama with incalculable consequences. Because in the collective memory of our people, the Diomaye/Sonko duo must not break up based on the political positioning of these two outgoing ladies of the Republic.
However, we are among those who believe that the pairing of these two protagonists was a political blunder. While Aïda Mbodj's case is more acceptable, Mimi Touré's is frankly unacceptable and intolerable. Conversely, some rightly believe that if Macky Sall had appointed Mimi Touré as President of the National Assembly, things would have taken a different turn, since, in Macky Sall's favor, she had hurled insults at the Pastef party leader. The freshness of Mimi Touré's vile, even repugnant, remarks against Ousmane Sonko still rings in our ears.
What is intolerable and unjustifiable is seeing Mimi Touré playing a leading role in a project she is trying to usurp, despite not having contributed a single iota to it. By agreeing to be the guardian of such a scenario, Diomaye Faye is neither serving himself nor the project. He had better things to do than to propel Macky's former Prime Minister into the spotlight. In this era of accountability, and especially in this era of "Jub, Jubbeul, and Jubbanti," this is certainly a disgrace. Mimi Touré is not worth a single prayer on Senghor Avenue. Her appointment to head the Diomaye-President coalition is a clumsy move by President Diomaye. On this point, we align ourselves with the position of the President of Pastef, who had the idea of rethinking the structure and operation of the Diomaye Coalition around the concept of the Patriotic Alliance for Work and Ethics (APTE). Just like the Benno Bokk Yakaar experience, the Diomaye-President coalition must have Pastef as its driving force in order to better manage an entity that cannot overshadow the presidential party.
It is clear that the real challenge now is to save this unprecedented duo in the annals of world politics. We have seen duos like Senghor/Dia, Wade/Idy, and elsewhere in the world like Sankara/Blaise, Putin/Medvedev, but certainly the Diomaye/Sonko pairing is unlike any of these. It would be far too early to describe the nuances of these duos in this editorial. But let us focus on our duo, which we have supported, even glorified, as a gift from God for Senegal.
Through their professional journey, which led to a close family bond, this duo embodied for Senegal, and especially for Africa, a new hope for renewal against a comprador elite that had ruled and plundered the continent's resources for the benefit of tax havens and developed countries. Throughout Africa, the rise of Diomaye/Sonko was celebrated, and above all, it presented Senegal as a democratic showcase, exerting a powerful fascination across a continent still struggling with the lack of genuine democratic foundations.
Certainly, wielding power is difficult. The perception from the outside bears no resemblance to the reality of managing it internally, which is bewildering due to the sheer scale of the tasks to be solved in a country lacking everything. Especially since Macky Sall's record has not helped the new team, in its first 18 months, to fulfill the expectations placed upon them. Added to this is the catastrophe and the magnitude of the hidden debt, which have led to Senegal being dragged through the mud, but above all, to having to beg for and chase after a program with the IMF. This undermines President Sonko's concept of sovereignty.
But with time and the first promising actions taken by the new regime, they may be able to respond to the concerns of the Senegalese people.
So, what's important is that Sonko and Diomaye must understand that what binds them is a thousand times more important than letting an entourage, and especially a bunch of hotheads, opportunists, or last-minute fools, throw a wrench in the works. Both men now have ample inner resources to sit down, talk like old friends, share anecdotes, their time in prison, the mistreatment they endured under Macky Sall's regime. They recall their professional journeys, which shaped their commitment to workers through unionism and later to politics with Pastef, fighting the previous regime, notorious for its unprecedented plundering of public funds, fighting the injustice suffered by the people, and eliminating from the public sphere politicians who, since independence, have only thought of enriching themselves. In short, a fraternal discussion. This approach, of course, facilitated by mutual friends, will allow this dispute to be settled definitively, ensuring that each party retains their institutional boundaries and, above all, preventing infiltration by dubious individuals whose ultimate aim is to separate the two men.
