"Africa must serve Africans first."
I want to commend with admiration the audacity of the Senegalese government. Daring to renegotiate certain mining and oil contracts — agreements which, for too long, have been unfavorable to our people — is a courageous and necessary act.
Sovereignty is not just talk. It begins with controlling what belongs to us: our gold, our oil, our gas, our minerals. For decades, these resources have primarily benefited other continents, while our people have lived with far too little. It's time for that to change.
Let's be honest: some leaders believed that maintaining power meant satisfying the interests of foreign powers by granting them access to our resources. But power, when used to please others, always ends up betraying the people. History has shown this.
Today, we must turn the page on our inferiority complexes and take control of our destiny. It won't be easy, and no one pretends it will be. It will require sacrifices, resilience, and above all, responsible governance: fewer privileges for our leaders, more rigor in the management of our states, and more seriousness in serving the people.
After more than 60 years of independence, it's time to look at our history with clear eyes. We haven't always progressed as we should have. Sometimes we've stagnated. Sometimes we've even regressed. But nothing is irreversible.
Africa has everything it needs: youth, energy, intelligence, and resources to become a major player in the world of tomorrow. To achieve this, we must strengthen our South-South partnerships and build genuine cooperation between nations of the Global South.
Because political independence without economic sovereignty is merely an illusion.
A people who do not control their resources do not control their destiny.
