UNE REPUBLIQUE À TERRE : LE SENEGAL (Par Meleye Seck)
The Republic is not dead. It is just lying there, eyes open, watching its own contradictions swirl around it, a whirlwind of sensational news and tasteless jokes on display.
The nation wants to stand tall, but its institutions are limping: a justice system that defends itself but remains inaudible, an amorphous and noisy executive in its political upheavals, a parliament whose President sheds crocodile tears, a people who shout loudly but are not listened to, or only during election periods.
Diomaye promises a break with the past but recycles the same practices, the same reflexes, the reflexes that have already brought the country to its knees. He strangely presents us with a commissioned report at a time when the country is economically burdened by debt and reports that are nowhere to be found.
The decisions of the Jub, Jubal, and Jubanti are now made in the dimly lit corridors of the Deep State. Mimi is making the rounds of the "Grand Orient," of which she is undeniably the "Grand Master." What have we done to deserve this?!
The Republic is on its knees, not because it has been overthrown, but because it has been exhausted by political calculations, ego wars and power grabs disguised as reforms, by institutional battles where everyone wants to be the sun even if it means burning the homeland.
Yet Senegal has never lacked human resources, intelligence, or courage. What is lacking today is political virtue, the kind that prioritizes the state over career, the nation over ambition, and truth over words.
The Republic of Senegal is down, yes, but it can still get back up provided we stop sitting on it.
