A revolution hijacked: the system reasserts its rights (by Abdoulaye Dieng, entrepreneur)

Une révolution confisquée : le système reprend ses droits (par Abdoulaye Dieng, entrepreneur)

A revolution took place, painful but achieved through the ballot box. A rare and historic event. Senegal succeeded where so many others fail: overthrowing an authoritarian regime through the sheer force of popular suffrage, without civil war or coup d'état. It was a victory for the people. But today, this revolution is faltering. The system, meanwhile, is regaining its footing. It is reorganizing, advancing under a veil of secrecy, but confident in its own power.

This system, once embodied by a man who proclaimed himself "Gniouth Gniateur," gleefully plundered the country's resources and inflicted a bloody beating on dozens of citizens. It established a violent regime: arbitrary arrests, unpunished crimes, the plundering of public assets, manipulation of institutions, and the infantilization of the people. Even today, its agents reappear in the media, the administration, and the networks of power, while the former president, living in exile, dreams of a comeback.

The people, for their part, expected a clean break: justice, accountability, profound reforms. They wanted to see the walls of impunity crumble. But instead, they find a desperate situation… and above all, a thick legal curtain, riddled with incomprehensible subtleties, that seems tailor-made to protect the guilty. As if the complexity of the law now serves as a refuge for those who have plundered, manipulated, and oppressed. The citizen watches this technocratic charade without understanding a word of it—and understands even less why the criminals sleep soundly.

Confusion persists, and the government struggles to make a decision. While the people await clear signals, former perpetrators masquerade as victims and dare to accuse yesterday's resistance fighters of authoritarian excesses. Arrests multiply… but systematically result in acquittals. And these acquitted individuals, far from being discreet, are lauded by certain media outlets and celebrated by an irresponsible and unscrupulous fringe of the opposition. Such weakness is suicidal for any state governed by the rule of law.

But the alarm becomes an urgent matter when the press itself becomes a tool of outright sabotage. The case of Madiambal Diagne is a striking example. Accused of serious crimes and barred from leaving the country, he fled clandestinely, defied the Republic, and from France is waging a crusade against Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. Worse still, some journalists, in blatant disregard of the confidentiality of the investigation, the justice system, and national sovereignty, are giving him a platform. Two of them were arrested and then released after openly and defiantly interviewing a fugitive. And yet, a segment of civil society and the opposition is outraged… not by the scandal itself, but by the arrests! Where is the morality? Where is the respect for the State? Where is the justice? There is no freedom of expression for those who flout the Republic. There is a demand for truth and firmness.

This case goes beyond the simple flight of one man. It reveals the system's permeability, its capacity to regenerate itself, to infiltrate. As long as these attacks remain tolerated, as long as the State hesitates, the Republic will regress. Action must be taken. These individuals are not political opponents. They are enemies. And they must be treated as such.

But the silence doesn't only emanate from the highest levels of government. The intellectual elite, too, is evading responsibility. They are simply observing. They have abandoned their role as critical conscience for decades, settling into the comfort of compromise. In this pivotal moment, this abdicating elite cannot serve as a guiding light. Change will not come from those who have learned to remain silent in order to endure, but from those who have the courage to speak, think, and act differently. President Diomaye must not rely on this declining intelligentsia. He must draw upon the vital force of the people, this lucid, principled energy that carries the profound aspiration for national recovery.

It is incumbent upon President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, as the custodian of the popular will and guarantor of the institutions, to strengthen ties with his Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, with clear-sightedness and resolve. For the latter is not merely a collaborator: he is the central figure, the principal guarantor of the hoped-for renewal, the political and moral foundation of this democratic revolution. It is precisely for this reason that he has become the primary target of forces hostile to change.

The immediate annulment of the unjust political convictions still hanging over him is not merely a matter of justice; it is a strategic imperative to preserve the coherence of the project championed by the presidential duo. There is a clear intention to isolate the president from his natural base. This attempt at division must be decisively crushed. Ousmane Sonko must be protected. The people will not accept another abdication of power.

There can be no third way. The people still have full confidence in the Diomaye-Sonko duo, to whom they have given a large parliamentary majority. This legitimacy is not merely symbolic: it is a clear mandate to dismantle the system, bring down its symbols, dissolve its networks, and neutralize the bastions of terror—starting with the APR headquarters, a notorious haven for murderous thugs. Those who ordered these killings must be brought to justice, and the parliamentary majority must be used to pass unambiguous laws, allowing for merciless and relentless action against the enemies of the nation. The truth must be restored, whatever the cost. Otherwise, the revolution will not only be hijacked. It will be crushed.
