Destruction de la fresque de Papa Ibra Tall : la direction des MSAD dément la mairie de Thiès
Faced with the outrage of Thiès residents after the destruction of the mural of the late Papa Ibra Tall located in Place de France, the Thiès municipality stated in a press release that the operation was carried out by the Senegalese Decorative Arts Manufacturing Company (MSAD). This version was formally denied by the institution's current management.
In a note received by our editorial staff on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, the MSAD general management wanted to provide major clarifications to remove any ambiguity about its responsibility in this matter.
The new management, in place since March 2015, informs the public that it has not been associated, either directly or indirectly, with any project to rehabilitate, restore or intervene on the work of the famous artist Papa Ibra Tall.
However, the current management sheds light on the possible origin of this confusion. According to the information available to them, it was the former MSAD administration that initiated collaborative steps with the Thiès city hall.
This project, supported at the time by a visual artist, aimed to reproduce the fresco exactly after its demolition.
By disclaiming responsibility for the act of destruction itself, the MSAD's management reaffirms its unwavering commitment to preserving the national artistic heritage. It also states that it is open to any institutional consultation aimed at ensuring the safeguarding and promotion of works of art in public spaces.
This clarification now puts the Thiès town hall back at the center of questions regarding the conduct of these works on such an emblematic historical and cultural site.

Picasso, Van Gogh, Monet, Dali,… Et si tous ces artistes mondialement connus, dont la moindre production se vend à coups de millions de dollars, étaient sénégalais est-ce qu’ils auraient autant de valeur aujourd’hui ?
Bien sûr, il y a leur œuvre mais c’est surtout ce que leur société en a fait qui leur vaut cette notoriété posthume. À l’échelle du Sénégal, Pape Ibra Tall est un de ceux qui peuvent s’inviter à la table de tous ces artistes de talent. Oui, mais le Sénégal est un drôle de pays avec une population qui réclame une mémoire et qui fait tout pour effacer cette dite mémoire.
Quand cette fresque a été créée, j’étais à l’école primaire dans cette ville qui est mienne. Ce monument était le bien commun aux thiessois et nous en étions fiers. La dernière fois que je suis passé devant après 40 ans d’absence, il a fallu que je me faufile entre moulte obstacles qui le cachaient comme un rébus pour finir de constater son état peu luisant. Quand je pense qu’on veut écrire notre Histoire alors qu’on donne aux monuments qui en témoignent moins de valeur qu’aux vespasiennes…. Il y a au moins une chose qui me rassure : on pourra tout faire disparaitre dans cette ville qui m’est chère mais son nom traversera le temps dévolu aux humains qui l’habitent. Et quand je serai dans l’au-delà, chaque fois qu’il en arrivera un nouveau qui dira qu’il vient de Thiès, j’aurai un frisson de fierté et je lui demanderai : «Alors, domou n’dèye, est-ce que tu as l’impression de changer de paradis ? ».
