The image is likely to shock sensitive souls: a little girl, Umu in the film, suspended in mid-air, above the balcony railing. If Marodi, the series' production company, wanted to make a lasting impression with the final sequence of "Baabel," mission accomplished. So much so that L'Observateur devoted a page to the scene in its Thursday edition, inviting the company's CEO to recount its preparation.
"First, on a mental level (a few days before filming): we explained the context to the parent," Massamba Ndour rewinds. "After agreement, we requested their presence for support. Once on set, several mechanics were observed in order to make the filming smooth and not expose the child for too long to the balcony exercise.
Marodi's boss assures that other precautions, particularly "logistical," were taken. "A real relationship of trust was established between Fa and baby Umu. This way, the child actor would not be subject to panic attacks or anything else. These are days, even weeks of mental and moral preparation, ensured by the director and the screenwriter. In addition, a parent of the child actor attended the filming to provide moral support to the child."
As a general rule, assures Massamba Ndour, Marodi pays particular attention to the use of images of children in its productions. "The standards are progressive and at every moment we learn, we evolve, we try to do better," he proclaims. "But from then on, we can specify that our regulatory framework begins with the signing of the contract, which is not with the child actor, but with a parent or beneficiary. Then, people with clearly defined responsibilities, such as the project manager, the director, the acting coach, follow the young actor step by step in order to properly supervise him, but also to mentally prepare him to manage notoriety, criticism, risks and other things... It's still a long road, which will have to be traveled."
