Le Sénégal à l’honneur : Deux chefs-d’œuvre sénégalais raflent les grands prix du Clap Ivoire 2025
The 25th edition of the Clap Ivoire festival, dedicated to short films by young West African filmmakers, revealed new talents and rewarded the excellence of Senegalese cinema. The UEMOA Grand Prize was awarded to Senegalese director Abdoul Aziz Basse for his documentary "2002, Battle Against Oblivion," praised for its ability to explore collective memory surrounding two significant events in Senegal's history: the country's first participation in a FIFA World Cup finals and the sinking of the ferry "Le Joola."
The documentary, already recognized at the last FESPACO in Ouagadougou, highlights the importance of historical memory and invites reflection on collective responsibility and the remembrance of tragic events. According to the organizers, this award underscores the growing recognition of Senegalese documentary cinema on the African stage.
Furthermore, the Kodjo-Ebouclé Grand Prize, awarded to the best international film, was given to Senegalese filmmaker Khalifa Ba for his fiction film "Guedj Amoul Bankhass," directed by Ivère Hounkpatin and starring Pape Aly Diop. The film addresses the issue of irregular migration by following the journeys of young Senegalese determined to reach Europe by sea. Inspired by true events, the film raises awareness of the dangers of these clandestine departures and challenges young people, families, and authorities. It also won the awards for Best Direction and Best Sound at the Côte d'Ivoire Film Festival.
The Clap Ivoire festival takes place in two stages: a national selection in each of the UEMOA member countries, followed by an international competition in Abidjan. The jury is composed of film professionals from the eight countries of the West African Economic and Monetary Union. Presented as a tool for cultural integration, the event fosters exchanges between young filmmakers and showcases authentic African narratives.
The festival remains a major springboard for Senegalese filmmakers, some of whom, like Moly Kane, El Hadji Mamadou Niang "Leuz" and Khardiatou Sow, have already been rewarded in previous editions.
This 25th edition confirms Clap Ivoire's role in promoting West African cinema and professionalizing regional talent.
