Singer Souleymane Faye celebrates his 50th anniversary in music this Saturday, October 18, 2025. This celebration of five decades of creation, blending symbols, Senegalese traditions, and intense emotions, will be marked by an opening concert at the French Institute of Senegal in Saint-Louis. It will then be followed by other concerts planned in Guinea, France, Canada, Gambia, Casamance, and finally at the Daniel Sorano National Theater (Dakar).
An iconic figure in Senegalese music, Souleymane Faye began his musical career as a chorister. Born on January 13, 1951, in the Diourbel region, the so-called Philosopher of Senegalese Music was passionate about music from an early age. As a child, he learned carpentry from his uncle, but also spent his evenings listening to and imitating singers like James Brown, Otis Redding, and Johnny Halliday.
In the 1970s, he began performing in some concert halls. His performances later earned him a place in the music group "Xalam" in 1985. He thus became their lyricist and singer. He was revealed to national and international audiences with titles like "Dooley," "Keurgui," and "Xarit." His music is a blend of Afro-blues, world music, jazz, and pop, with lyrics that address social themes such as love, the status of women, and exile.
After leaving "Xalam," Souleymane Faye launched his solo career in 1988 with his first album, "Fukki Juni," recorded with the late Habib Faye. A work characterized by a style blending mbalax, blues, and poetry, with other albums such as "Yeugouloma" and "Sogui." Souleymane was then recognized for his depth and ability to move away from popular musical genres to create a unique style, hence his nickname "the Senegalese Bob Dylan." In his solo career, he collaborated with artists such as the French duo Antiquarks for songs about courage and hope, or Coumba Gawlo Seck.
Poet storyteller, the artist Souleymane Faye made his talents known through the hit " Arva ", in which he features singers Jahman X-press, Soda Mama Fall and Kiné Lam.
