This initiative has the support of Youssou Ndour, an international music icon. The artist has agreed to accompany and support the project, according to a source close to the Thiès City Information and Communication Department.
The City Council took the opportunity to emphasize the strategic importance of this application, submitted at the invitation of UNESCO. Since its inception, the International Jazz Festival has been held in major cities, including Istanbul (2013), Osaka (2014), Paris (2015), Washington DC (2016), Havana (2017), Saint Petersburg (2018), Melbourne (2019), Tangier (2024), Abu Dhabi (2025) and Chicago (2026).
The event has never before been hosted in sub-Saharan Africa, making Thiès and Senegal pioneers in this region. Through this bid, the City of Thiès affirms its commitment to strengthening its cultural appeal and international standing. Consequently, the railway capital is preparing to experience exceptional moments in 2026 and 2027.
