"Affirmer la souveraineté du Sénégal dans un monde en recomposition" : Le « défi » de Cheikh Niang, nouveau chef de la diplomatie

The new head of Senegalese diplomacy, Cheikh Niang, has officially been installed in his new position. During a sober handover ceremony held yesterday, Tuesday, September 16, the diplomat listed the challenges awaiting him and his team at the head of this prestigious department.

At the heart of the new roadmap he outlined to his colleagues is the urgent need to "assert Senegal's sovereignty in a changing world." This, he adds, "is achieved by defending our strategic interests firmly but also intelligently, so that our voice continues to be heard and respected."

"Ladies and gentlemen, I invite you to safeguard the legacy of our predecessors, while remaining open to the innovations of our time. In this way, Senegal will continue to embody a voice of peace, dialogue, and mutual respect; a voice heard in Africa and around the world," the new Minister of Foreign Affairs told his teams.

The new minister believes it is necessary to adapt Senegalese diplomacy to geopolitical, economic and technological changes so that Senegal can regain its place in the community of nations.

"We must be clear-eyed: the world is going through an era of profound upheaval. Power relations are being redefined, new powers are emerging, security and climate threats are multiplying, while the digital revolution and artificial intelligence are redrawing the very contours of international relations. Faced with these changes, we have no choice: we must be both bold and vigilant, open and firm, innovative and faithful to our values," he emphasizes.

Realizing the importance of the diaspora in the new state policies, Cheikh Niang is committed to "strengthening ties with the diaspora, the living force of the Nation, which embodies both the universality and the dynamism of Senegal."
