Alexandrie : Le vibrant témoignage du Sénégalais Omar Diop devant Macron et Al-Sissi

The inauguration ceremony for the new campus of Senghor University, held this Saturday, May 9, 2026, in Alexandria, Egypt, was marked by a moment of intense emotion. Omar Diop, a Senegalese alumnus of the institution, delivered a moving speech before Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, French President Emmanuel Macron, and the Secretary General of the Francophonie, Louise Mushikiwabo. Speaking on behalf of the alumni, he recounted his exceptional journey, from his humble beginnings to the strategic responsibilities he now holds in the African energy sector.

From the Senegalese bush to the heights of engineering

Addressing an attentive audience, Omar Diop spoke movingly about his roots: “I was born in a village in the Senegalese bush.” Raised in a family of seven children between Guéoule and the mining town of Boro, he grew up admiring the engineers who led his father. This ambition led him to consistent academic excellence, culminating in an engineering degree from the École Polytechnique in Thiès. His path took on an international dimension when he enrolled at Senghor University in Alexandria, from which he graduated at the top of his class. For him, the impact of this education went beyond the purely academic: “Senghor didn’t just give me a degree. Senghor transformed me,” he declared.

A leader dedicated to the development of Africa

Twenty-five years after his time in Egypt, Omar Diop is now leading a $600 million program for the Senegalese government to modernize the national electricity grid. Drawing on his experience in Nairobi, he reminded the assembled leaders that his success is part of a global trend. "Hundreds of Senghor alumni now hold positions of responsibility in governments, financial institutions, universities, civil society, and the private sector across Africa and Haiti," he emphasized, demonstrating the strength of the institution's pan-African network.

A plea for education

In concluding his speech, which was met with enthusiastic applause, Omar Diop delivered a powerful message on the importance of knowledge, quoting an African proverb: “If you think education is expensive, try ignorance. Senghor changes lives. Senghor changes a continent. Senghor changed me.” Through this personal account, Senghor University offered its international guests a concrete demonstration of the impact of education on the transformation of the African continent.

BRAVO pour le parcours! Mais rectification pour le proverbe "Si vous pensez que l'éducation coûte chère, essayez l'ignorance". L'original est de John F. Kennedy qui disait "If you think that knowledge is expensive, try ignorance".
