Bassin du fleuve Gambie : légère baisse des niveaux d’eau observée dans plusieurs stations.
The Tambacounda-Kédougou Water Resources Brigade (BRE/TC-KDG) published its daily hydrological bulletin on Friday on the evolution of the waters of the Gambia River and its tributaries. The data collected reveals a general downward trend in levels at several stations, despite some occasional increases recorded on certain tributaries.
Tributaries with contrasting behaviors
At the Diaguiri station, the water level fell to 2.80 m compared to 2.90 m the day before, a decrease of 10 cm. On the other hand, at Afia Pont (Thiokoye), a significant increase was observed: 2.10 m this morning compared to 1.74 m the day before, an increase of 36 cm.
Some stations, including Niokolo Koba, Diahra Pont, and Goumbayel, have not reported recent data, making a comprehensive assessment difficult. As for Sinthiou Malème, the water level is now too low to reach the measurement scale.
The Gambia River is falling
On the main course of the river, the trend is also marked by a decline:
• Kédougou: 3.61 m this morning, a drop of 9 cm compared to the previous day.
• Mako: 3.61 m, a slight decrease of 1 cm.
• Simenti: sharp drop recorded, the level goes from 6.88 m to 6.41 m, a decrease of 47 cm in 24 hours.
• Gouloumbou: 7.31 m, compared to 7.51 m the day before, a drop of 20 cm.
Levels still far from alert thresholds
The Brigade points out that alert levels vary depending on the station: 7 m in Kédougou, 6 m in Mako, 13 m in Simenti and 12 m in Gouloumbou. Current measurements therefore remain well below these critical thresholds.
Towards close monitoring
These daily observations, carried out at 8 a.m., make it possible to monitor water trends and anticipate potential flood risks. Local authorities, technical services, and local residents are thus regularly informed in order to strengthen their resilience to climate hazards.
BRE/TC -KDG assures that monitoring will continue rigorously to ensure an effective early warning system in the Gambia River region.
