Jean-Luc Mélenchon followed the presidential election in Ivory Coast with great interest. Alassane Ouattara won the election handily, with 89.77% of the votes cast. The president will be sworn in next December for a fourth term as head of state.
For the president of La France insoumise, the re-election of Mr. Ouattara, for "an unconstitutional 4th term", was meticulously prepared.
He "eliminated all his competitors by prohibiting them from being candidates."
He notably criticizes the Ivorian leader for eliminating the competition in order to continue his tenure at the head of this West African state. "Before the election, he achieved a feat that must be commended, namely eliminating all his competitors by preventing them from being candidates. That way, the problem was solved," declared Mr. Mélenchon last week at a conference on "The Political Moment."
The leader of the rebels believes that France is "responsible for part of this situation," since it was France that installed Alassane Ouattara in power by force in 2011. "It was France that went to dislodge Laurent Gbagbo from his presidential bunker," the politician recalled.
