La France réduit ses personnels diplomatiques au Mali en proie à l'insécurité

France "has decided to adapt its diplomatic and consular arrangements" in Mali, in other words, it will reduce its staff in the context of a deteriorating security situation in that country, the French Foreign Ministry announced on Friday.

This decision was made "in light of the context and following the example of several of its partners," explained the French Foreign Ministry, referring to the United States and the United Kingdom, which have already evacuated their "non-essential" personnel. However, it did not specify the number of people affected.

The instructions to the approximately 4,000 French nationals present in Mali remain unchanged since the appeal on November 7 to plan a temporary departure as soon as possible on the commercial flights still available.

Furthermore, travel to Mali is strongly discouraged, regardless of the reason.

Since 2012, Mali has faced a deep security crisis, fueled in particular by the violence of jihadists from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM, affiliated with Al-Qaeda) and the Islamic State (IS) organization, as well as community criminal groups.

JNIM jihadists are imposing a blockade on fuel imports, strangling the economy of the landlocked Sahelian country.

The situation in Bamako seemed to be improving slightly in recent days with the arrival of trucks, but some cities in the rest of the country have still been without fuel for weeks.

Long queues are still visible outside gas stations and the population has the equivalent of less than six hours of electricity per day in the capital, according to an AFP correspondent.

In its latest propaganda video released Tuesday, JNIM announced it would intensify its blockade and stated that it would now consider truck drivers as combatants.

In another document published on Thursday, JNIM also calls on NGOs, businesses, personalities, and associations to stand up against the ruling junta.
