Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko left Istanbul for Dakar on Monday, August 11, 2025, after a five-day official visit to Turkey at the invitation of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Accompanied to his plane by his host, who expressed his friendship and that of the Turkish people, Sonko concludes a mission marked by diplomatic and economic progress.
Arriving in Ankara on Wednesday with a delegation comprising six ministers – Birame Diop (Armed Forces), Abdourahmane Sarr (Economy, Planning and Cooperation), Yassine Fall (African Integration and Foreign Affairs), Birame Soulèye Diop (Energy), Serigne Guèye Diop (Industry and Trade), and Mabouba Diagne (Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Livestock) – as well as directors general, Ousmane Sonko was received with great pomp on Thursday by President Erdogan. A tête-à-tête at the presidential palace preceded the signing of contracts between the ministers of the two countries in various sectors.
"Relations between Senegal and Turkey are under the seal of strategic partnership," said Ousmane Sonko, highlighting the historical ties initiated by the opening of the Turkish embassy in Dakar in 1962. Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his ambition to increase bilateral trade to $1 million, tripling its current volume.
After two days in Ankara, the delegation traveled to Istanbul, where Sonko chaired the Senegalese-Turkish Business Forum, organized by the Private Businessmen's Association, the Turkish Foreign Economic Relations Council (DEIK), and the Senegalese Agency for the Promotion of Investments and Major Projects (APIX). Bringing together 300 investors, including 50 Senegalese, the forum provided an opportunity for discussions with leaders of major Turkish companies, who were received in audience by the Prime Minister.
Investment projects, aligned with Senegal's new doctrine of win-win partnership, have been announced in the energy, agriculture, and defense sectors. According to the Senegalese ambassador to Turkey, Turkish private financing of $9 million (approximately 5.4 trillion CFA francs) is expected in the energy sector.
Ousmane Sonko also met with the 1,924-member Senegalese community in Turkey, who expressed their concerns, particularly regarding residence permits. The Prime Minister reiterated the Turkish authorities' promise to ease procedures to facilitate the obtaining of these essential documents.
