Élevage : Le Sénégal réceptionne 1 050 bovins d'élite en provenance du Brésil
This is a historic step for Senegalese livestock farming. On December 24, 2025, the port of Dakar welcomed the "second generation Guzera" cattle from GEPES. This large-scale operation, marked by the arrival of 1,050 animals of high genetic value, is central to the national livestock improvement strategy championed by the highest authorities in the country.
In a solemn ceremony, the Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Livestock, Dr. Mabouba Diagne, personally welcomed this new herd, comprised of 400 Guzera breeding bulls, 350 pregnant Guzera heifers, and 300 pregnant Girolando heifers. Rigorously selected in Brazil by a mission of Senegalese experts and veterinarians, these elite animals are destined to transform the productivity of the dairy and beef sectors.
A historic 50% subsidy
To realize this vision of structural transformation, the State has made an unprecedented financial effort. The Minister announced an exceptional 50% subsidy for purchasing livestock. "This strategic operation benefits from a historic State subsidy, the first since the 1970s, demonstrating my personal commitment to supporting our livestock farmers," stated Dr. Mabouba Diagne.
This initiative embodies the determination of President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko to make food sovereignty a concrete reality. By reducing dependence on dairy imports, the government intends to strengthen the rural economy and sustainably combat poverty.
"A new era for modern livestock farming"
The collaboration between the Breeders' Group for Breed Improvement (GEPES), chaired by Mr. Arona Galo Bâ, and the Ministry's technical services was the cornerstone of this success. The expertise of the veterinarians involved from the outset ensured healthy animals perfectly adapted to the expected performance standards.
Visibly proud of this progress, Minister Mabouba Diagne emphasized the long-term impact of this investment: “Through this initiative, I aim to sustainably strengthen the dairy and meat sectors, improve the productivity of our breeds, and create economic opportunities in rural areas. Together, we are opening a new era for modern, efficient livestock farming, resolutely focused on the future of Senegal.”
With the arrival of these second-generation Guzera cattle, Senegal is giving itself the means to achieve its ambitions: to move from a contemplative form of livestock farming to a true animal industry, a pillar of national economic development.
