Bassin du fleuve Gambie : des niveaux d’eau contrastés selon les stations hydrométriques.

The Tambacounda-Kédougou Water Resources Brigade published its daily hydrological bulletin on the Gambia River and its tributaries on September 18, 2025. The readings revealed a contrasting trend in water levels at different stations, ranging from significant increases to slight decreases.

Tributaries with divergent behaviors

At the Diaguiri station, the water level dropped by 21 cm in 24 hours, from 4.40 m to 4.19 m. In comparison, it reached 5 m on the same date in 2024.

The Afia Pont station (Thiokoye) shows a sharp rise: 4.19 m this morning compared to 2.53 m yesterday, an increase of 1.66 m in one day.

At Diahra Pont, the drop is minimal, only 1 cm, while at Niokolo Koba, the level increases slightly by 1 cm, to reach 5.88 m.

On the other hand, the data from Goumbayel could not be collected, and at Sinthiou Malème, the water level no longer reaches the measuring scale.

The Gambia River: relative stability but vigilance maintained

On the main course of the river, the trend is generally stable with slight variations:

  1. Kédougou: 6.50 m, down 4 cm from yesterday. The alert level is set at 7 m.
  2. Mako: 4.92 m, a decrease of 1 cm. The alert level is 6 m.
  3. Simenti: 9.29 m, up 13 cm from yesterday, but still far from the alert level of 13 m.
  4. Gouloumbou: 8.45 m, an increase of 24 cm. The alert level is 12 m.

A tool to prevent flood risks

According to the Water Resources Brigade, these bulletins aim to inform administrative authorities, local authorities, technical services, NGOs, and local residents. They are part of a monitoring and early warning strategy to better anticipate flood risks and strengthen community resilience to climate hazards.
